Journey to Modern Mythology

The release of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief does make me super exciting, and I am expecting the movie to become the next brilliance book-to-screen adaptation movie franchise. The idea of combine ancient Greek mythology with modern day is really marvelous, plus strong supporting casts as Gods & mythical creatures does boost up the attraction.

However, I’m really disappointed with the movie. It is not a miserable movie, but I was expecting a better story and stronger villain. Too many plot holes in the movie, and when the villain finally revealed himself in the movie, it just failed to convince me that he actually planned and worked this out all by himself.

In fast, the actual main problem of this movie is the original plot of the novel has been distorted, and this act has ruined the magic of the novel. Here are some of the major issues:
  • 3 important characters - Kronos (The leader of the first generation of Titans; father of Zeus, Hades & Poseidon), Ares (The God of War) & Clarisse La Rue (demigod; daughter of Ares) and the great prophecy are all incredible important parts in the series and yet neither made an appearance nor had any significance in the movie.
  • The majority of the movie is about the journey of 3 teenagers going after the magical pearls, but the pearls were minor in the novel.
  • The original main villain of Percy Jackson & the Olympians series is Kronos, which is a much better & darker villain if compare with the movie. And the final climatic fight in the novel is Percy against Ares instead, which is more exciting.
On the other hand, creative ideas of merging various ancient myths with the modern world, the stunning special effects, and fascinating characters played by Hollywood movie stars did make the movie better. Nevertheless, I’m still looking forward the movie adaptation of second installment of the series - The Sea of Monsters, and hope it will correct all the flaws.
